Sir Alex Ferguson lifted his 34th trophy as Manchester United defeated Aston Villa in the League Cup Final. Despite Villa taking an early lead from a James Milner penalty, it was United who created the most chances and Michael Owen equalised before half time. Owen was replaced by Wayne Rooney and United pressed forward in the second half. Rooney scored a stunning header and bagged his 28th goal of the season and although Villa piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes, Utd held firm and won the trophy. It looks like Fabio Capello isn’t going to let the current England squad anywhere near a recording studio before the World Cup Finals in South Africa this year. He sees is as an unnecessary distraction. He’s got a point actually, when the team themselves attempt to make a record it usually ends up in tears.
Here are a couple of our best and worse England Songs
1. Back Home by the 1970 England squad
Marching bands. footballers wearing headphones and smoking in a cramped recording studio, those were the days. Back Home got to No.1 in the charts for three weeks and England were ‘Back Home’ shortly afterwards.
2. World In Motion by New Order & England.
Co written by Keith Allen for the 1990 tournament, and featuring a rap by ‘MC John Barnes’, this is one of the better efforts. New Order were at there very best and Barnes’s rap could be described as ‘interesting’ if nothing else. An extra verse encouraging penalty practice may, in retrospect, have been wise.
Three Lions by The Lightning Seeds, Baddiel & Skinner and England.
Originally written for the Euro ‘96 campaign and re-released in 1998, this slice of jaunty Brit Pop tugged on the hearts of England fans. The ‘thirty years of hurt’ lyric transferred to the terraces and the song was a huge hit twice. England got knocked on penalties by Argentina and another twelve years of hurt have ensued.
Vindaloo by Fat Les
Also released for the ‘98 competition and featuring Keith Allen (again) and Blur bassist Alex James, ‘Vindaloo’ was a mix of chants and cheese that borrowed heavily from existing England chants – A big hit with the fans who still sing it today.

A big thanks you to all of the buyers we met at the Birmingham International Spring Fair. Here are some England football gifts from the 1966 World Cup final, with our own England No.1 Fan in the foreground. The majority of England merchandise in 1966 was based around the ‘World Cup Willie’ mascot. We especially like the ‘World Cup Pale Ale’, available in two bottle sizes, presumably to allow for extra time. Even Shredded Wheat got in on the act producing a World Cup jigsaw.
Also shown is the News Of The World from the Sunday following the final with a great picture of Bobby Moore handing the Jules Rimet trophy to Sir Alf Ramsey.
These items are now highly collectible and we think our England No.1 Fan may also be valuable England merchandise in the future, especially if we win it!

Chelsea FC is one of the oldest football clubs in the Premier league. Founded in 1905, Chelsea play at Stamford Bridge in the West London borough of Hammermith and Fulham. Stamford Bridge has the capacity for 41,841 fans. The club play in a royal blue kit with white socks. The crest features a ceremonial lion holding a staff.
Ted Drake became manager in 1952 and set about modernising the club, removing the Chelsea pensioners crest, improving the training facilities and rebuilding the team.
In the 1954 – 55 season they won the League Championship.

Chelsea were bought in 2003 by Russion oil tycoon Roman Abramovich. Abramovich has ploughed millions in to the club and has made them a powerhouse in world football.

Liverpool FC have some of the greatest stars in the Barclays Premier League. Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are legends on Merseyside and the support for Rafa Benitez team is immense. Other big stars on Merseyside include Alberto Aquilani, Yossi Benayoun and Glen Johnson.
Liverpool FC are one of the most successful football teams in history and football legends like Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Alan Hanson, Stevie Heighway, Phil Neal and Emlyn Hughes are all heroes on the Kop, as are managers like Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. During the 1970’s and 80’s Liverpool FC dominated English and European football. Between 1977 and 1984 they won four European Cups. Liverpool has won a joint-record eighteen league titles, seven FA Cups, seven League Cups, three UEFA Cups, and five European Cups, an English record. They won a cup treble in 2001 under Rafa Benitez.
Liverpool FC play in an all red kit, their emblem is the city’s crest, the liver bird. The team play at the legendary Anfield stadium. Liverpool FC fans famous anthem is the song – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, whose words adorn the famous ‘Shankly Gates’ outside the ground. In 1906, the banked stand at one end of the ground was formally renamed the Spion Kop after a hill in Natal. The hill was the site of the Battle Of Spion Kop in the Boer War where over 300 men of the Lancashire Regiment died, many of whom were from Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur are a Premier League football team from North London and are more commonly referred to as Spurs. They currently play at White Hart Lane which has a capacity of 36,000. The ‘Hotspur’ name is associated with Harry Percival, who was also Harry Hotspur from Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1. Percival was believed to own land in the neighbourhood. These days Tottenham play in white and dark blue kits with a hint of yellow. The team’s crest is a cockerel standing on a football and their motto is ‘Audere est Facere’ which means ‘To Do Is To Dare’.
Tottenham’s biggest rivals are north London neighbours Arsenal, matches between the two teams are some of the most highly charged of the season and are known as ‘North London derbies’.
Tottenham were the one of the first teams to pay big money for foreign players, purchasing Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa following the 1978 World Cup Finals in Argentina.
Tottenham have won the FA Cup twice and in the 1983/84 season they won the UEFA Cup. Tottenham greats include Danny Blanchflower, Johnny Giles, Jimmy Greaves, Teddy Sheringham, Paul Gasgoine, Jurgen Klinsmann, Glen Hoddle, David Ginola and Robbie Keane.

West Ham United started life as the Thames Ironworks in 1895 and reformed in 1900 as West Ham United.
